STOP HEALTH ILLITERACY!
Start Your Next Education: YOU
It’s a
great responsibility on the part of GPs, specialists, and other health professionals to know how to
treat our illnesses.
I feel however, it is our greater responsibility to know how to prevent ourselves from becoming ill in the first place. And if and when we do become ill, we need to know the necessary steps to return to an optimum state of health.Naturally, I do not promote flushing your pills down the toilet. Rather I would encourage you to be a diligent student of your own body and mind, and of what nature has provided for your healthy life.
I propose you start a new Educational Degree. You can even call it what you will. ‘THIS IS YOUR LIFE’ would be a good course title, and you can design your research by choice, mastering the following subjects, as an example:
1. Chemistry: Learn what happens to your body as you metabolise certain foods. Allow food to be your life supply, not your demise.
2. Physical Ed, and Environment: Learn what happens when you exercise, and then exercise outdoors, so you can breathe air that is fresh, not airconditioned.
3. Psychology. Appreciate life's little miracles to alleviate stress which can kill you a little bit at a time.
4. Metabolic Physics: Allow the sun to infuse as much Vitamin D into your skin and bones, and prevent or cure colds, cough, and the dreaded flu; aid in metabolising nutrients into energy; and prevent the even-more-dreaded cancer.
I have worked in the health care industry for several years, first as a massage therapist and then as a sleep technician (and now I work with the deaf and hearing impaired). So you can imagine I have read countless books about health, but the ones I enjoy the most are those that empower me with medical and scientific explanations, written in the layman's terms like those 'Idiot' guides.
Here is one book I would recommend (although it's not an Idiot guide, I thoroughly enjoyed the authors' humorous take on our bodily systems):
YOU: The
Owner's Manual
Look for the 'Updated and Expanded
Edition'
By Mehmet C Oz and Michael F Roizen
(Hardcover -- 29 April 2008)
It’s written by anaesthesiologist Dr Michael F Roizen, developer of the RealAge concept and Dr Mehmet Oz, America’s most popular heart surgeon. These two doctors are professional practitioners in conventional medicine, yet avid proponents of preventative health care. Dr Roizen is an outspoken critic of politicians who mess up with public health care funds. Dr Oz is the founder of a non-profit organisation that sends thousands of university health graduates to counsel teens about being healthy. (They have roadshows called 'Highway To Health'). They do have several ‘YOU’ books, but this one is a good starter to read as it covers the whole body in general.
Certainly they are celebrity doctors, and most people might chalk that one up as a fault. But world health needs critical attention, and anyone saying you don’t need to be a doctor OR even a natural health therapist to understand and heal your body is to me a hero of sorts.
I hear all the time there is a severe doctor shortage. Well, I think there are just too many people out there who are health illiterate. Don’t be one of them.
