Search the internet and you’ll come up with thousands of articles explaining why we age. But although the process
of ageing is complex, the keys to extending your life are simple: a peaceful living, fewer calories but optimal
nutrition, less pollutants, sufficient water, adequate sleep and regular exercise.
Chia has two major nutritional benefits that help us meet some of these criteria: Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acid and
Antioxidants.
Omega-3 EFA
In a previous page we explained that our bodies cannot live
without EFAs and that we can only get them from our food. Some of the world’s leading nutritionists would say
that virtually every person is deficient in EFAs, with the Omega-3 deficiency often being
critical.
Many sources of EFAs degrade easily. They turn rancid and oxidize when exposed to air, and degrade when exposed to
sun and light. Flaxseed and fish oils, for instance, have to be packed in sealed opaque containers and
stored in a cooler. If they have been opened for more than six weeks, their benefits would have reduced
significantly. Moreover, if they start tasting the least bit rancid, the best thing to do is throw
them away, as rancid EFAs can become toxic and a dangerous, concentrated source of free radicals which are known to
cause cancer.
Ironically, free radicals are a side-product of our bodies’ conversion of calories into energy and the oxidation of
food. This means that about a large portion of free radicals in our body come from the food we eat, especially if
our diet is high in refined carbohydrates.
Ageing is hastened when we are unable to deal with the damage caused by too much free radicals. We can all slow
down ageing by keeping the damage down to a minimum by working toward two things:
·
Eat lesser calories while optimizing nutrition, and
·
Neutralise free radicals as quickly as they are produced.
Antioxidants
The natural anti-oxidants in Chia provide molecules that slow down ageing in two ways.
1.
They combat oxidation in Chia, which is why Chia is seen as the most stable Omega-3 EFA of all. When you
consume Chia, you are eating a high-quality food with a high concentration of anti-oxidants but with very low
calories.
2.
Once these powerful anti-oxidants are released into your system, they aggressively work toward neutralizing the
free radicals produced by other food.
