The benefits of a healthy metabolism
The rise of Diabetes Type 2 in
modern society is becoming the biggest health problem in the world. There are more than 220 million people in the
world today with diabetes, 90% of whom have diabetes Type 2. What is
more alarming is that more than 300 million more are thought to have pre-diabetes, not aware of it, and are
destined to develop Type 2 diabetes 2-5 years down the track if no intervention measures are
taken.
Because
diabetes is a direct result of a metabolic disorder, we (your Health Science Researchers at www.chialive.com.au) have made metabolism a priority subject to bring
to our readers’ attention. In coming issues, we will also clearly define metabolism, investigate what factors
are causing our metabolisms to break down all at the same time, and see how it’s causing a lot of problems in
our society.
Metabolism is a complicated chemical
process, so it's not surprising that many people would rather think
of it in its simplest sense: as something that influences how easily our bodies gain or lose weight. But in
reality, metabolism is more than just about burning calories to lose weight. An efficient metabolic
process is all about processing the food you eat and transforming them into chemicals that will, to mention a
few functions:
·
Support the growth of new
cells,
·
Efficiently maintain body
tissues,
·
Store energy for use in the
future,
·
Produce the energy required
for all cellular activity
·
Heat the body
·
Enable the muscles to contract
and move the body,
·
Release waste products through
skin, kidneys, lungs and intestines
An efficient metabolism then is needed
even if you’re not overweight, ageing, or a sports person. It isn’t something that happens only when we’re awake
either. We need a healthy metabolic system whether we’re healthy or
ill, an adult, a teenager, a child or infant,
and we need it when we are awake and (especially) when we’re asleep! (We will discuss the sleep factor in future issues.)
Contrary to what some people say, you
DO NOT need a power tablet or a power drink to increase your metabolism. Nor do you need hours and hours of aerobic exercises. It is advertising
statements like these that cause people to think “Well, that is too expensive, too hard, too stressful, I can
never do that, and so goodbye to health.”
What you need is right within your
vicinity and within your budget: the right kind of natural thermogenic foods eaten throughout the day, regular
strenuous activity-- also throughout the day, and enough rest and sleep.
In earlier times, diseases like
diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure were if not nonexistent, then exceedingly rare. Consider also that
people did not force themselves to exercise 1 hour straight every day, and did not add powerful supplements to
their diet.
Instead they walked, ran, did housework
and lifted heavy furniture and tools. For foods, they ate what they liked and enjoyed, and very rarely did they
ever diet. Of course, their foods were prepared with less nasty stuff than what we have now! They also did not
subject their bodies to metabolic –damaging substances like tobacco and alcohol.
FIRE

Always In A
Rush and Skipping Meals? No wonder you’re ready for bed by noon! Make this Amazing Shake to replace breakfast
and have enough for your mid-morning snack, exercise for 15 minutes, and your on your way to firing up your
metabolism for the day.
THE AMAZING
SHAKE (all
ingredients are foods that speed up metabolism)
1. The
previous night, soak the following in 1 liter of purified or filtered water:
·
3 tablespoons
chia seeds, make sure you whisk seeds well to avoid clumping (protein, omega-3 fats, fibre, antioxidants,
calcium and other minerals)
·
half cup
rolled oats (energy, carbs, fibre, protein, minerals)
·
25 raw almond
seeds (protein, variety of healthy fats, fibre, vitamin E, calcium and other minerals, this produces almond milk
when blended)
·
10 raw dates
to sweeten (carbs, protein, vitamins A, B6, and B-complex)
·
Handful of
dried sultanas (make sure it’s the type that hasn’t been dried with extra sugar)
2. Freeze:
·
12
strawberries or equivalent of other berries (organic is better)
·
2
bananas
3. Premix and leave in
fridge:
2 teaspoons
organic coconut oil
Raw honey or agave syrup or xylitol to taste
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon carob (alternative to and much better than chocolate)
4. Next morning pour all the
above in a blender and add:
·
2 apples, cut
up
·
4 ice
cubes
5.
Blend in high speed for 30 seconds.
6.
Drink half for breakfast, pour the rest in a thermos and take to work.
Wait, we’re not finished yet. Remember, get some exercise. 30 minutes would be ideal, but if you’re like me
who’s a mum and drives to work, and always in a hurry, 10-15 minutes is better than nothing. So, arrive at work
15-20 minutes early, stretch your muscles for about 1 minute, then walk briskly around the block for 10-15
minutes in the sunshine to get some Vitamin D in your system. Expose as much skin as possible to the sunshine, so
remove your coat, and roll up long sleeves. Before entering the building, stand in the sun, close your eyes, slowy
inhale and exhale fully with long deep breaths to stock up on fresh oxygen and replace the old. Thank the Powers
That Be for your life and everything in it. Relax for another minute. Then start your day.
Do this at
least 3 days of in your work week and you’ll be a different person.
